Roentgenological Observation on Cholesteatoma in Chronic Otitis Media

Abstract
Roentgenological observation was made on 60 cholesteatomas proved by operation at our Oto-Rhino-Laryngology department during the period of January 1964 to June 1965.
The results were as follows.
1. In a total of 60 cholesteatomas, sex distribution ¡¤was 46(76.7%) in male incidence in the and 14(23.3%) in female (ratio is 3:1) with the peak ale group of 11 to 20 year old. There was no significant difference in incidence between the right and left side, and were 4 patients In bilateral occurrence.
2. Roentgenographically two type of distinction on cholesteatoma could be made;a completely filled type with a well circumacribed. radiolucent defect, and a partially filled one with a irregular radiolucent defect. The latter (39 ears) was twice as common in incidence than the former(21 ears), and accuracy of differential diagnosis between both types was approxinately 80%. However, in 3 cases out of a total of 60 cases, preoperative x-ray diagnosis of cholesteatoma could not he made.
3. Operative findings demonstrated that the completely filled type was filled by tooth-paste lide cholestreatoma, while the partially filled one contained cholesteatoma like fragments of dough, so that x-ray differentiation of these two types could foretell not only the anatomical location, degree and extent of cholesteatoma but also its gross nature pre-operatively.
